Legendary game maker, Shigeru Miyamoto, has apparently had enough at the top of Nintendo’s development devisions, and is stepping back to focus on smaller scale projects, and help develop Nintendo’s younger staff.
Miyamoto will remain with Nintendo, but will no longer be responsible for acting as the overseer. He’ll be able to work on smaller projects, and help growing the up and comers within Nintendo.
In an interview with Wired, he said “what I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself.”
“Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small.”
His initial plans is apparently to make a game that will be in a state to show off within a year – a much smaller scale project than the 5+ year Zelda projects.
This is a good thing, and a problem for Nintendo. While Miyamoto has had little hands-on activity with recent Nintendo projects, having his oversight has remained instrumental for the quality of Nintendo’s recent games.
On the other hand, being hands on can only be a good thing for Nintendo – they might find some new, original IPs out of it.
