Garshasp: The Monster Slayer is a really, really unfortunate game. It has so, so much potential, but has been released on a platform that for most people will be completely inappropriate for its gameplay. And as such, it’s probably not going to get the attention it deserves.
In essence it’s a God of War clone on PC. That in itself isn’t such a problem… assuming you have a gamepad of some kind. There are many Steam gamers who don’t have such peripherals. Perhaps they just play some casual games or World of Warcraft on their laptops when away on work trips. Perhaps they never thought to pick up a gamepad because most PC games are now optimised for mouse and keyboard control. I know I don’t have one, and for people like me, Garshasp is heartbreaking. I love everything about it, but I struggle to play it.
Fighting swarms of enemies using a keyboard is just not fun |
Honestly, puzzles don’t get much more difficult then pushing levers around |
Some of the landscapes are amazingly creative |
For people with a keyboard/ mouse setup:
Good approach with the controller – because I would agree that a lot of PC gamers don't have them. I didn't until a few weeks ago when my game collection sort of demanded it and as a fan of GoW, this looks interesting to me.

Every real PC gamer has a gamepad…some more than 1

I'll have to come back and read more of this post, but that is unfortunate about the controls. I've owned a number of controllers for PC, but didn't really have a modern gamepad around until last year. I ended up getting a wired 360 for Super Meat Boy (ah, probably should have gotten a hori turbo) and have been using it for a number of other titles since.
Depending on the game, it's an entirely difference experience than kb/mouse and it's usually better in my opinion. Sure, you can't go bragging how l33t you are with your keyboard on the steam forums anymore. Those are the breaks.

Hi Robert,
Good to hear from you!
To enjoy this game, you really do need a gamepad – imagine if you tried God of War with a keyboard and mouse, and you'll see my point.
With a gamepad though, it's good, if short, fun. I still play it from time to time, because it's an easy adventure to run through 🙂

I am familiar with the story and having read the Garshasp-nama of Asadi Tusi I was eager to get the game and feel most reviews are a bit harsh on the Iranian developers who no only didn't have help but had to overcome interference from their government in order to get this game released. I think they did a fine job for their first game. But I agree there is room for improvement with their next release. Hopefully something from the Shahnameh.
Rostam, great, great, grandson of Garshasp has enough exploits for a series of games
Hi Jim,
Thanks for taking the time to comment!
I very much hope they were successful enough to work on another game. I'm a big fan of seeing the "non traditional" areas for game development grow – I love that there is a middle eastern game development industry now.
And you're absolutely right, the mythology behind this game is absolutely fascinating and one that we don't get much exposure to in the west.
It's just a pity that, as Iranian developers, it's going to be hard for them to produce games for the consoles. That is clearly where their taste in game experiences lie.
all the talk about game pads – I prefer the pc because the keyboard and mouse arrangement is the most left handed friendly arrangement. you just can not set an 360 or playstation controller to be comfortable for a lefty you have to adjust to it and with my pc I run the mouse with my left hand and can configure the keyboard to be comfortable with most games.
